How the calculation works
How do I calculate GST on a base price (Exclusive of GST)?
To add Goods and Services Tax (GST), multiply the base price by the applicable GST rate (e.g., 5%, 12%, 18%). Formula: Base Price × (1 + (GST Rate / 100)). For example, ₹10,000 at 18% yields ₹1,800 in tax, for a total invoice value of ₹11,800.
How do I extract GST from an inclusive price (Reverse GST Calculation)?
To find the base price from a GST-inclusive amount, divide the total price by (1 + (GST Rate / 100)). Formula: Total Price / 1.18 (for an 18% rate). For example, if you collected ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST, the base revenue is ₹10,000, and the GST payable is ₹1,800.
What are the standard GST slabs in India?
The GST Council categorizes most goods and services into slabs of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% (with 40% applying to select luxury and 'sin' goods via cess). Essential goods may be 'nil-rated' (0%). Always verify your specific product's Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) or Services Accounting Code (SAC) for exact rates.
When should I charge CGST/SGST versus IGST?
If the 'Place of Supply' is within your registered state (Intra-State), the total GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST or UTGST). If you sell to a customer in another state (Inter-State), you charge Integrated GST (IGST) at the full combined rate.
The calculator does arithmetic only. The rate that applies to your product or service depends on its HSN or SAC classification and current notifications. Confirm it before invoicing.
